Types of Sundials

There are two major groups of sundials, each of which is broken down into many further types and categories – Azimuth Sundials and Altitude Sundials. Azimuth Sundials types  (including Horizontal Sundials,  Vertical Sundials and some Panoramic Sundials) determine the time from the sun’s angle on its daily arc. In other words, Azimuth Sundials tell the time with the help of the hour angle of the sun.  CHOOSE SUNDIAL TYPE TO ORDER.

Horizontal Sundials

The key to using Horizontal Sundials is that they should be adjusted for various latitudes. And that tells the exact, final time. The Horizontal Sundial has two main parts: the Gnomon  and the Horizontal dial plate. The Gnomon is the vertical part of the sundial that casts a shadow in order to tell time. The  Vertical Sundial  has to main parts: the Gnomon and the Shadow-receiving plane. The Shadow-receiving plane of the  Vertical Sundial is aligned vertically and the Gnomon is positioned in a way that it aligns with the Earth’s axis of rotation.
